Find the mini skirt for your body type

One of the most important things to consider when choosing a mini skirt is how it fits your body type.

You want a skirt that will flatter your shape, not one that makes you look frumpy or uncomfortable.

That’s why I recommend a slim-cut A-line skirt as the best option for most women over 40. A-line skirts have a slight flare that creates a slimming effect and balances out your hips and thighs.

A-line skirts are versatile and easy to style, and they come in a variety of colors and patterns that are suitable for most occasions.

They also have a structured fabric that holds its shape and won’t cling to your body. Some of my favorite fabrics for A-line skirts are wool, tweed, corduroy, denim, and leather.

Some of my favorite colors for A-line skirts are black, navy, burgundy, camel, and olive.

Avoid the dreaded too-short syndrome

Another thing to consider when choosing a mini skirt is the length.

You don’t want a skirt that’s so short that it exposes your underwear or makes you feel self-conscious every time you bend over or sit down.

You also don’t want a skirt that’s so long that it covers your knees and makes you look shorter or older than you are (then it wouldn’t be a mini skirt).

The ideal length for a mini skirt is about three inches above the knee.

This length shows off your legs without revealing too much skin, and it also creates a proportionate and flattering silhouette.

If you’re tall, you may want to go for a slightly longer length to avoid looking too skimpy.

If you’re petite, a slightly shorter length would help you avoid looking overwhelmed by fabric. The key is to find a length that makes you feel comfortable.

Style it with a long jacket or sweater

One of the best ways to style a mini skirt is to wear it with a long jacket.

This combination creates the illusion of extra coverage without hiding your legs, adding some sophistication and polish to your look.

A long jacket can be anything from a trench coat to a duster to a blazer, depending on the season and the occasion.

A long jacket can also help you mix and match different patterns and textures for a dynamic and interesting look.

For example, you can pair a plaid mini skirt with a solid-colored coat, or a leather mini skirt with a tweed blazer, or a denim mini skirt with a faux fur coat.

The possibilities are endless!

Go monochrome

Another way to style a mini skirt is to go for a monochrome look, which means wearing one color or different shades of one color from head to toe.

This look can help create a cohesive style that can make you appear taller and slimmer.

One of my favorite monochromatic looks is an off-white knit paired with an off-white skirt.

This look is cozy and chic and can help draw attention to your face and hair.

To make this look even more flattering, style it with shoes or boots that are close to your skin tone for a leg-lengthening effect.

You can also try other monochrome colors such as black, gray, navy, or camel for a classic look.

Try denim

Denim skirts are a classic and versatile option. They’re casual and comfortable, but they can also be dressed up with the right top and shoes.

They’re available in many different styles and washes, but the key is to avoid denim skirts that are too short or too tight.

Too short and too tight can be very sexy (no shame if that’s what you’re going for, that works too) and a bit much in the wrong setting.

Instead, go for a denim skirt that’s slightly above your knee and has some stretch or give to it. These styles can hug your body without squeezing it and give you some room to move around.

To style, you can try a denim-on-denim look with a chambray shirt or jacket, or you can mix it up with other fabrics such as cotton, silk, or wool.

For shoes, you can either go for flats or low heels such as ballet flats, loafers, brogues, or ankle boots, or you can go for high heels (pumps, sandals, or knee-high boots).

Frequently asked questions

Is it OK to wear a mini skirt after 40?

Absolutely! There’s really no age limit for wearing a mini skirt or any other skirt, as long as you feel good wearing it.

And let’s be honest, sometimes a mini is just the thing for a night out.

However, there are some tips to make it work, such as wearing flat or low heel shoes, choosing an A-line or full skirt, and avoiding tight-fitting or stretch minis.

These tips will help you create a flattering, age-appropriate look. Remember, you can wear a mini skirt at any age.

What is the perfect skirt length and type for women over 40?

This all depends on you. Your height, your shape, and your personal preference.

But generally, skirts that fall just above or below the knees are flattering and appropriate for most occasions.

They’ll show off your legs without revealing too much skin unless you want to.

A-line skirts, pencil skirts, wrap skirts, pleated skirts, jean skirts, and flared skirts are some of the most common types of skirts that work well if you’re over 40, as they flatter most shapes.

You can also experiment with different fabrics, colors, and patterns to suit your style and mood.

How can I accessorize my mini-skirt outfit?

You can accessorize your mini skirt outfit with some jewelry, a scarf, a hat, a belt, or a bag depending on the season and the occasion.

For example, you can add some sparkle with earrings or a necklace, some warmth with a scarf or a hat, or some shape with a belt or a bag.

Just try not to overdo it and keep your accessories simple and elegant.

You don’t want to look too busy or cluttered. A few well-chosen accessories can make all the difference in your outfit.
